Year 2020 – A Reflection from a Single Parent

In 2020, we saw continuous reports of depression and uncertainty.  Our nation was consumed with the effects of the Coronavirus (COVID 19), which first surfaced in Wuhan, China.  Immediately afterwards, cases began being reported here in the states.  The states went into a panic and government officials tried to determine its severity.

Unfortunately, it was especially difficult for the United States as we were not only hit with COVID 19, but it was an election year.  Subsequently, the United States had to endure the results of a careless President who demonstrated laxness and insensitivity to the American people with the handling of this deadly virus.  There were reports that Trump knew of the deadly virus a few months prior to the public being made aware of it.  Under this President’s reign, COVID-19 cases continue to increase.

Many Americans lost their jobs, were subjected to lay-offs or furloughs, endured school closings, dealt with loss of health insurance coverage, loss of family and friends to the virus; there were increased reports of mental illness and homelessness. Subsequently, people of the black and brown communities as well as immigrants suffered.  These individuals held most of the frontline employee roles (i.e hotel, restaurant and food service workers). More importantly, single parents who were considered essential works. If they  were child care service providers, grocery store workers, educators navigating distance learning, package delivery and logistical service workers then they were forced to make tough decisions.  Decisions on whether to continue working the frontlines and risk catching the virus or stop working and suffer the consequences of lost income.  No parent should have to make this inhumane decision – put their employer before their child.  Unfortunately, employers subjected single parents to making such a decision.

As a single parent, I lived and survived the aforementioned. Today, I am so thankful that I survived. And, despite all of the barriers that were out of my control, I have so many accomplishments to report:

  1. My son and I remained healthy and did not contract the Coronavirus.

2. I survived 3 layoffs and a reduction in pay.

3. I made a career change from the non-profit sector to secondary education.

4. I secured a job as a Middle School Math Teacher, which allows me more quality time with my son.

5. I began writing my first book, which is scheduled to be completed in early 2021.

6. I voted during the 2020 election.

7. I reconnected and strengthened my relationship with friends and family.

8. I grew my relationship with my Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

Undoubtedly, 2020 was a whirlwind year, but I am grateful for the journey.  A deadly virus shook the nation, but I remained faithful and committed to what was important to me – my son and his future.  I am thankful for the strength to elevate and rise above what the world created.

I am powerful, I am beautiful, I am educated, I am a single parent!

Many blessings in 2021!
